Cancún-Specific Packing Notes

Cancún is a warm, humid, sun-intense destination where you will spend most of your time in or near the water. The packing list skews toward swimwear and sun protection. Dress codes at premium Cancún all-inclusives are smart casual for dinner — significantly less formal than European destinations.

Mexico uses US standard electrical outlets — no power adapter needed for US travelers. Most resorts have excellent Wi-Fi. USD is widely accepted throughout Cancún.

Documents — Carry-On, Always

  • US passport — valid for at least 6 months beyond travel dates
  • Visitor permit (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) — provided on the flight or at the airport, free of charge
  • Resort confirmation and flight details — printed and saved offline
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Credit card — for the resort account and any off-resort spending
  • Prescription medications — bring extra

Clothing for a 7-Night Cancún All-Inclusive

Dress codes at Cancún properties

Excellence Playa Mujeres: Smart casual for dinner — collared shirts or nice trousers for men, sundresses or resort-appropriate separates for women. No shorts, sleeveless shirts, or flip-flops in the main dining room at dinner. 1 to 2 elegant nights per week where slightly dressier attire is appropriate.

Hyatt Ziva Cancún: Smart casual for the main dining room. Some specialty restaurants have slightly elevated dress expectations. Overall a relaxed dress code — nicer than the pool but far from formal.

What to pack

  • 8 to 12 swimsuits or bikinis — you will wear more than you think
  • 5 to 7 cover-ups, sundresses, linen shirts for daytime
  • 2 to 3 smart casual dinner outfits
  • 1 slightly dressier outfit for a special dinner or elegant night
  • Flip flops, sandals, and comfortable walking shoes
  • Light wrap or cardigan — restaurants and airport are aggressively air-conditioned

Sun Essentials

  • Reef-safe sunscreen SPF 50+ — Mexico legally requires reef-safe sunscreen at cenotes and most beach areas. Bring from home — resort shops charge significantly more
  • Rash guard or UV shirt for long beach days — Cancún sun is intense
  • Lip balm with SPF — often forgotten, always needed
  • After-sun lotion — aloe-based. You will use it more than you expect
  • Sunglasses — polarized lenses for on-water days
Day one sun warning: The combination of excitement, new environment, and unusually strong sun catches couples off guard on their first day. Arrive with SPF already applied. Limit direct sun exposure on day one. Getting burned before day two of your honeymoon is extremely common and entirely preventable.

What to Leave Home

  • Hair dryer — every resort room provides one
  • Heavy formal wear — unnecessary at Cancún properties
  • Full-size toiletry bottles — bring travel sizes only; resort provides basics
  • Work laptop — leave it at home, seriously
  • Too many shoes — flip flops, sandals, one pair of dressy shoes covers everything

What Most Couples Forget

  • Reef-safe sunscreen in quantity — buy it at home, not at the resort shop
  • Small bills in USD or pesos for tipping, local purchases on Isla Mujeres, cenote entry fees
  • Waterproof phone case — for cenotes, catamaran excursions, and pool use
  • Portable charger — a full day out on an excursion drains batteries fast
  • Insect repellent — especially for any evening outdoor events or jungle excursions
