Negril vs. Montego Bay —
Which Should You Choose?

The two main resort areas in Jamaica are 90 minutes apart and feel genuinely different. Here is the honest comparison so you can make the right decision for your honeymoon.

The Core Trade-Off

Negril has the better beach — Seven Mile Beach is simply one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. Montego Bay has airport convenience — Sangster International (MBJ) is Jamaica's main gateway and Montego Bay resorts are 20 minutes from the terminal versus 90 minutes for Negril.

That trade-off drives most of the decision. Here is how to think through it.

The Case for Negril

Seven Mile Beach is the defining Jamaica beach experience. Nearly 11 kilometers of uninterrupted white sand, flat calm water, palm trees, and the kind of turquoise that travel magazines use as a standard. When people picture a Caribbean beach, this is frequently what they are imagining.

Sandals Negril sits directly on this beach. Beaches Negril is also here for families and multigenerational groups. Negril town has a more relaxed, authentic Jamaica atmosphere than Montego Bay — Rick's Café sunset cliffs, casual beach bars, and less of the tourist-commercial feel of the MoBay strip.

Tina's recommendation for 7+ nights: Negril. The 90-minute transfer from the airport is a one-time cost you pay twice (arrival and departure). For a 7-night honeymoon, 3 hours of transfer time is a small price for Seven Mile Beach every day.

The Case for Montego Bay

Montego Bay (MoBay) is Jamaica's most cosmopolitan resort area — more restaurants, more nightlife options, and more activity beyond the resort walls. Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Royal Plantation (nearby in Ocho Rios direction) serve this area well.

The airport proximity is genuinely valuable for shorter trips — 3 or 4 nights where a 3-hour round trip for transfers represents a significant percentage of your total time. Montego Bay is also the better base if you plan to do day trips around the island — Ocho Rios waterfalls, Blue Mountains, and other destinations are more accessible from here than from Negril.

What About Ocho Rios?

Ocho Rios is worth knowing — home to Sandals Grande Riviera and Royal Plantation. More jungle than beach. Dunn's River Falls is nearby. Transfer from MBJ is about 90 minutes, same as Negril.

  • Planning day trips around Jamaica → Montego Bay area
  • Want the most elaborate Sandals property → Ocho Rios (Grande Riviera)
  • Most intimate small-property experience → Ocho Rios (Royal Plantation)
  • Destination wedding with guests → Beaches Negril or Sandals Negril
